The Extraordinary Marriage

God vs. Worldview: Strengthening Your Marriage Through Faith (20)

In a world often filled with conflicting messages and values, it can be challenging for spouses to navigate their relationships according to God's teachings.

The world's view often emphasizes self-interest, success, and instant gratification, while God's Word encourages love, sacrifice, and commitment.

Understanding this contrast can help you align your marriage with God's principles, even if you are the only one fully committed to living by faith.

The importance of nurturing your marital relationship

7 Ways Following God's Word Strengthens Your Marriage

  1.  Unconditional Love

    • Verse: 1 Corinthians 13:4-7: "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs."
    • Benefit: By modeling Christ-like love, you learn to accept your partner's flaws and imperfections, fostering a deeper emotional bond.
  2. Encourages Forgiveness

    • Verse: Ephesians 4:32: "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you."
    • Benefit: Practicing forgiveness helps to heal wounds, reducing resentment and promoting harmony in the marriage.
  3. Builds Trust

    • Verse: Proverbs 3:5-6: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."

Why?  Because he created all things & set the standard we live by.

  • Benefit: Trusting God together can create a stable foundation for your marriage, helping you navigate challenges with confidence.
  1. Fosters Open Communication

    • Verse: James 1:19: "Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry."
    • Benefit: Following God's guidance encourages healthy communication, this I share often in many of my podcast episodes, because truly listening allows each person to express their feelings and resolve conflict constructively.
  2. Encourages Selflessness

    • Verse: Philippians 2:3-4: "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others."
    • Benefit: Prioritizing your partner's needs fosters a spirit of cooperation and teamwork, enhancing marital satisfaction.
  3. Promotes Unity

    • Verse: Ecclesiastes 4:9-10: "Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up."
    • Benefit: Focusing on shared faith helps couples work together toward common goals, strengthening their bond.  This is one of my favorite verses that my husband & I have practice through our 47 years of marriage.
  4. Provides Hope and Resilience

    • Verse: Romans 15:13: "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."
    • Benefit: Relying on God's promises can give couples the strength to overcome challenges and maintain a positive outlook on their marriage.  Especially important if you feel you are working alone.

Conclusion

In a world filled with distractions and conflicting values, grounding your marriage in God's Word can provide clarity and strength. Even if only one partner actively seeks to follow God's teachings, the principles of love, forgiveness, and unity can transform the relationship for the better. Trusting in God and applying His Word can lead to a deeper, more meaningful marriage, regardless of external circumstances.
